Are you winter ready? Still looking for that perfect stocking filler or Christmas gift?
Any SUP fan will tell you that there is something magical about paddleboarding on a crisp winters day. Appreciating the joy of the winter's air, and a quiet day as others hide inside, is the privilege of the winter paddleboarder!
The great thing about paddleboarding is that very little specialist kit is needed. You are free to wear your normal sports/outdoor kit, you can even snuggle in your coat as you coast along the waters. All that is required are good gloves and boots. We recommend investing in good gloves and boots as, for little cost, you can vastly improve your riding experience! They are also the ideal stocking filler for Christmas, whether you want to add them to your own list or gift them to a loved one.
In 2013, we voyaged to Greenland, where we discovered that the mitts we previously tried were ineffective. That’s why we recommend these Elemental Mitts, open palm mitts designed for use in cold weather to ensure you maintain excellent grip (and enjoyment!)
We have also tried and tested a number of different styles of footwear. We ensure that everything we recommend are items that our team would use! For full winter protection, we would advocate the wonderful NRS Boundary Wetshoe/Boot! Originally designed for sea kayaking, they are high enough to ensure your complete protection, even when launching!
However, if you want to treat someone who’s been particularly good this year, why not take a look at the Farmer John or Farmer Jane 'long john' suit (womens versions also available). They are supremely versatile as elements are removable and so can be worn for six months of the season as the weather changes. They can be used for any sport but they are perfectly suited for paddling as, being sleeveless, your shoulders are not restricted. The suits are made of tereprene, which is different from neoprene as it does not contain oil. They have high thermal properties and are very warm!
